The Nayatt School Social Emotional Learning Team, under the direction of teacher leader Heidi Brousseau is coaching students on how to identify their emotional state on a 5 Point Scale and how to choose a strategy to respond to their emotional state. The 5 Point Scale is a component of the larger social/emotional support system in the Barrington Schools.
The one on the scale indicates that a student is feeling good and ready to learn. Their emotional state is positive and productive. A student feeling at a five on the scale needs to access calming strategies so they are ready to learn. Strategies such as deep breathing, stretching, a movement break, a quiet activity such as drawing allow the students to regroup and refocus.
Mrs. Brousseau will be sharing her work in classrooms at the next PTO Meeting on November 29th. Babysitting will be provided.
Moving forward, Nayatt teachers will integrate the tenets of Responsive Classroom, Mindfulness, and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports to promote a healthy learning environment for all students. Many teachers are participating in after school book clubs around mindfulness or the growth mindset to increase their knowledge and skills in the SEL (Social/Emotional Learning) Competencies adopted by the Rhode Island Department of Education.
