Join BMS’s School Improvement Team

BMS is seeking family members to join our School Improvement Team. The purpose of the SIT is to provide input on and monitoring of SMART Goals (School Improvement Plan) for continuous improvement based on the District Strategic Goals (Scorecard), data, and feedback provided by the school and district-based teams such as the data teams, the Health and Wellness Committee, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) teams, and the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support teams.

Teams will provide voice and an avenue for communication from each building to their school community and the larger district community regarding progress toward our strategic goals and objectives. Teams will also be integral to the participatory governance of the school.  Student representatives are needed as well!

~ Spotlight on Learning ~

This week, we would like to shine our BMS Spotlight on Mrs. Roy. Thank you to Mrs. Roy for another successful round of "Research Skills" Training for our 8th Grade Social Studies students! This year she went above & beyond making interactive slides, handouts, and moments for students to turn & talk during the lessons. We know this will leave a lasting impression on the students as they transition to the high school! (Nominated by a member of our BMS Learning Community).

Do you know of a BMS Faculty/Staff/Student member who is shining bright? If you do, please complete the form below and we can include the nomination in an upcoming newsletter.

Barrington Farm School Composting:

Is it ok to throw out food if I compost it?

There are a whole lot of different places food can end up, from providing the energy we need to work, play, and live, to rotting in the landfill. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a Wasted Food Scale to help us see how different uses stack up and reduce the environmental impacts of our food.

We love composting at Barrington Farm School, but unfortunately, when it comes to edible food, composting doesn’t even make it into the top half of ways to use food. That’s because it doesn’t make sense to use resources to grow, harvest, process, and transport food (not to mention the money to buy it!) just to throw it out, even if it does end up in the compost. So, while composting is still much better than landfilling food, there are even better options.

Did you complete a Food Waste Audit? We’d love to hear how it went, what you learned about your household’s habits, and goals you might have for how to do better. No judgment! Email us your insights at compost@barringtonfarmschool.org.
