Teaching and Learning:

At last Thursday’s PTO Meeting, Ms. Taft and I facilitated a workshop with parents around the RULER Approach out of Yale University’s Center for Emotional Intelligence being implemented in the Barrington Public Schools.  This was a follow up to the Open House Presentation on September 24th.

RULER is an acronym for the 5 skills of Emotional Intelligence:

  1. Recognizing

  2. Understanding

  3. Labeling

  4. Expressing

  5. Regulating

RULER is an approach to creating a positive learning climate and the development of emotional skills of all adults and students within a school.  Most classrooms at Nayatt have implemented the first RULER Anchor Tool, the Charter. The Charter is developed collaboratively with the teacher.  Students identify 5 ways they want to feel at school and they commit to behaviors that will help them to feel those emotions at school. Teachers will be sending a picture of their Classroom Charter home via See Saw so that parents are able to discuss with their children.

This year, the Nayatt School Improvement Team will assess the implementation of RULER and Parent Communication to continue to improve the climate and culture at Nayatt School.  If you are interested in joining the Nayatt School Improvement Team, please visit https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScQWqfgYYUQeH3iF9JFW3uX4u4V-Dutxl2DskNWeu16SNwbaQ/viewform  and submit your application by Friday, October 11th.  Thank you for your time and attention.

Have a great week!
